Hampi

Ruins. Admiration tinged with sadness.
Magnificent sculptures, created by taking parts of the breathtaking environment.
A kingdom that tried to be tolerant, destroyed by the Mughal Empire which destroyed anything that didn't look like their own.
Ingenious constructions; the aqueducts that brought water from the Tungabhadra River; the pin-hole camera in the walls of the Virupaksha temple; the system of pipes in the Lotus Palace to keep the hall cool; the pillars that reverberate with the sounds of musical instruments. Perhaps the technology still exists, but the art is dead.

The Tungabhadra dam. A wall holding incredible amounts of water. Man harnessing nature. Does living together mean one controlling another?

The JSW steel factory. Spewing smoke into the sky, planting trees to ease their conscience.

All in all, a contradictory trip, and a wonderful time.

all in all a nice blog..... but "destroyed by the mughals".... where did you get that?
the fall of the Vijaynagar Empire was bought about by the Bahamani kingdoms. it was a struggle for power, resources and pride. lets not get too sentimental about it. the later rulers of Vijaynagar were, if nothing, extremely incompetent.

and your claims about the mughal empire "which destroyed anything that didn't look like their own", i will take with a pinch of salt, cos all we need to do is take a look at how they cultivated both indian and islamic arts to know that your statement is patently untrue.

suggest you read up on history and stop making blatantly false claims. we have enough untruths in our country anyway :)

yup, I agree... I meant the muslims, not the mughals.

and yes.... like every great empire, they were conquered when the rulers were no longer the ones that created the empire in the first place.

perhaps, a disclaimer is needed here... for I am no historian, and all that there is in the blog are flights of fancy.
